A couple of years ago today. Truly a wonderful memory - designing and installing a Vegas residency for Lady A at the Palms. So much heart... I miss this and all of these great people. Lady A filled the seats each night and left every guest smiling. I’m so proud and humbled to have been a part of this project. Dom Smith and Brent Maxon created a stunning lighting design and pushed the photons while @normal.studio.mtl provided the beautiful content. Looking back on a career thus far of many seemingly impossible challenges, there have been few projects that demonstrate that statement more than this one…

The year: 2007.
The tour: Roger Waters Dark Side of the Moon.
The project: Recreating Storm Thorgerson’s infamous “prism” cover art in massive scale, floating above the audience.

The end result was nothing short of a miracle and it became a bit of touring history. New technologies were created and existing technologies were pushed to their limits. The images still get reprinted in articles and I still get the lone writer asking about it from time to time.

It started with an unexpected phone call from the legendary* Marc Brickman and the venerable* John Wiseman… (One of those phone calls you never forget - for many reasons…)

I remember sitting quietly in my office and focusing on my pulse after that call. I knew that we were facing serious challenges on every facet of this design: limitations of existing technologies, significant safety concerns, power and cooling, regulatory approval – you name it. But I also knew we were absolutely going to deliver.
⠀
Why? Simple – I knew how to build a team. Because of this group and their individual talents, unique experience, and drive, we produced a stunning effect that safely mesmerized audiences around the world for over a year and literally ushered in a new era in touring laser effects and safe audience scanning. I couldn’t have succeeded without each of them.
⠀
The team included: George Dodworth (lasers, design, control), Casey Stack + Steve Jander (safety and compliance), and Chris Nyfield (Design/3D Modeling). Marc created a visually stirring show as usual, setting the stage for the dramatic reveal of this effect during “Eclipse”.

In the end, this will be a chapter in my career of which I’ll always be proud. They were good times and we all look back and smile at what we accomplished. (Note: these days, when I look down to answer a call and see ‘JWiseman’ on callerID, I sit down before I answer. Things you learn over time...)

Sunday Lasin... spent the afternoon dialing in new lensing and power settings on my home brew CNC/Laser cutter. But before I could start fabricating prototypes for the new entertainment tech on my list, I had to take take care of the REALLY important laser marking projects first...

Here’s a quick throwback from 1999.

It was an honor to work under the great Mark Fisher before he passed. I’ll forever remember the hours sitting next to him while he sketched his way through countless meetings.. Mark was a good friend and a mentor to me.
⠀
The tour was Yumi Matsutoya’s “Shangri La II”. It was a true spectacle and a tribute to Mark’s imagination (and guts!) For me, it was a lesson in building the right team and trusting them to do their jobs - because the risks were staggering.
⠀
The stage itself was a massive 5’ deep pool of heated water. Hydraulic floor panels could rise up and turn any section of the pool into a dry stage platform - and even rise above. Yumi’s dancers were actually a team of choreographed swimmers!
⠀
I’m still amazed that this production actually toured! It toured well and sold out everywhere as we traveled throughout Japan. A true testament to a thorough design and dedicated touring technicians.
⠀
I designed the articulated dancing water systems and fog effects for Mark as well as creating the first touring LED-based high power underwater lighting system. I had an incredible team of engineers and technicians around me to pull this off. After all, we were sending 3 phase electricity for the pumps, actuators and lighting into a pool of water filled with swimmers! And trust me- the Japanese safety inspectors took their jobs very seriously! (You think the GFCI plug in your bathroom trips easily? Lol ) Safety was paramount.

In the end, the dancing waters danced on cue as their nozzles swayed to the music, the underwater lights bathed the pool in beautiful color, and we kept Yumi dry in the process (mostly).

Great memories of this tour, my team, and of the great Mark Fisher. Thanks to Scott Ritt, Richard Huggins, Craig Nelson and Brant Wright - my incredible team on this project. We made some amazing art, gents, and we made it very safe!

Today’s #tbt is some footage from shop experimentation for Tequila Table Service for a swanky new destination club.
⠀
Designing safe and reliable special effects frequently uses theories of aerodynamics, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. Optical, lighting, and control design completes the development process. The rest is storytelling.
⠀
This particular effect had to stand up to harsh ventilation drafts and be ready to trigger from a wireless tablet on a moment’s notice when a patron ordered the package. In the end, it was the careful application of steam, liquid nitrogen, water based fog and a custom boundary-layer-producing nozzle that delivered a safe and reliable 14’ fall from the ceiling.

That genie was carrying a suitcase full of science went he went back in his bottle...

What do you do when the ceremonial ribbon-cutting scissors just aren’t good enough? You bring in a powerful laser to do the cutting...

November 13, 2009, I joined Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, DDI’s John Crawford, noted artist Leni Schwendinger and others on stage to officially open the City of Dallas’ flagship park - Main Street Gardens. (That’s a younger me on the right...)
⠀
Admittedly, there was a bit of ‘secret sauce’ in the gag, but the crowd was sure they were witnessing a powerful green laser beam dramatically slicing through a thick, glowing ribbon of fiber optic cable. Sparks flew, the music crescendoed and the crowd went crazy as we held up the freshly cut ends of the ribbon. Fireworks erupted behind the stage. Not your normal ribbon cutting ceremony- but “normal” is not something I’m known for pitching to my clients...

I still remember how much that chunk of fiber was shaking from everyone’s stage nerves while the laser was doing its thing. Even with a rehearsal, it was such a powerful sight to see the effect from that angle that the dignitaries got taken up with the moment - almost revealing the gag’s secret in the process! I did my very best to counter their movements and preserve the magic. What a fun and memorable night!

Today is a day I traditionally spend fine tuning the haunt that Kim and I prepare for the neighborhood kiddos. By this time, we’re usually touching up UV paint with airbrushes and adjusting each tiny pin spot and sensor so that every scare is perfect! I look forward to this day every year...

Not this year. The scare of heart surgery was plenty for me and since the zipper on my sternum is still healing, I don’t need to show anyone what THAT would look like if it opened... (Great idea for a new gag for next year, tho!!) This year, much to my chagrin, I’m being good and just handing out candy like my neighbors. But I sure miss it... maybe I’ll hand out rain checks as well- redeemable in 365 days...

BTS of the special effects equipment hidden under the stage. This is how Dragon vaporized Lord Farquaad each night without Christopher Sieber ever breaking a sweat.

Affectionately called the “Mega Ogre”, this was a proprietary system that released liquid CO2 through a series of shaped Cryo-Spoons and fog injectors that created a powerful, multilayer fog wall. The light trays were filled with hundreds of high power LEDs (Red, Blue and Amber) with our custom lensing and rapid flicker drivers. Overall, a really clever effect that was both explosive and deceiving to the crowd. (And the effect lasted just long enough for the real magic to happen on stage.. About that part, my lips are sealed 🤐)
